It is very soluble in water and liquefied ammonia. Aqueous solution is alkaline (PH=9). It is a little soluble in Methanol, Alcohol, and Methoxyethanol. It is also very hygroscopic. The Oxidation resistance is very strong under the normal temperature. It is decomposed to azonic, oxygen, carbon monoxide, finally changed to sodium oxide. It will burn or explode when contact with organic objects.

It is poisonous! 2000mg in 1 kg can make people die. The highest thickness for skin of human is 15%, or else the skin will inflame.

Used as mordant, bleacher, treating compound ,corrosion inhibitor, analytical reagent, expander and the material for manufacturing potassium nitrite ,nitro compound , azo dye etc..
